"Detox" is one of the most widely used words in health and wellness but it's also one of the most misunderstood. Used loosely, it can mean almost anything from a juice cleanse to a wellness retreat. Used accurately, it refers to something your body is already doing, every single day, without any help from a supplement, tea, or diet plan.
Our Detox category brings together two long-used botanical ingredients, each linked to traditional wellness practices. We've grouped them here for anyone interested in these plants and their history, not as a claim that either of them "detoxifies" the body or removes toxins.
Why "Detoxification" Is a Biological Process, Not a Product.
The body has its own highly sophisticated detoxification system, built entirely from your own organs, and it runs constantly in the background whether you take a supplement or not.
- The liver is the body's primary filtering organ, processing everything absorbed through the gut and breaking down substances so they can be safely removed.
- The kidneys filter the blood continuously, removing waste products and excess substances via urine.
- The digestive system, skin, and lungs all play supporting roles in eliminating waste from the body.
This is why, from a scientific standpoint, the idea of a supplement, tea, or juice "detoxing" the body in a few days is misleading, the organs responsible for this work are functioning around the clock regardless. What varies from person to person isn't whether detoxification is happening, but how well-supported those organs are by everyday diet and lifestyle factors, such as staying hydrated, eating a varied diet, and limiting excess alcohol.
Why People Are Still Interested in "Detox" Ingredients
Despite the confusion around the word itself, there's genuine, longstanding interest — both traditional and scientific — in certain plants that have historically been associated with liver and digestive wellness. This is less about "flushing toxins" and more about the plant's traditional use, its nutrient content, and its compounds.
A Note on What Supplements Can and Can't Do
It's worth being upfront: food supplements are intended to complement a varied, balanced diet — not replace one — and they are not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Neither of the products in our Detox range is intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition, and neither should be seen as a way to "detoxify," "cleanse," or remove toxins from the body.
What we can offer is a curated range of well-known botanical ingredients with a long history of traditional use, made to a high standard here in the UK. If you have a specific health concern, take medication, or have any condition affecting your liver or kidneys, we'd always recommend speaking to your GP or a qualified healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.
Learn About Our Detox Range
With that context in mind, here's a closer look at the two ingredients that make up our Detox collection.
Dandelion Root
Dandelion is a familiar plant that has a long history of traditional use across many cultures, particularly the root, which has traditionally been prepared as a tea or tonic. Our Dandelion Root is made from a concentrated 10:1 extract, providing 500mg per capsule.
Milk Thistle
Milk Thistle is a flowering plant whose seeds have been used in traditional European herbal practices for centuries, most notably in connection with the liver. Its key compound group, collectively known as silymarin, is the marker most commonly used to standardise Milk Thistle extracts. Our formulation is standardised to a high 80% silymarin content, at 150mg per capsule.
All Life Essentials supplements are manufactured in the UK to ISO9001 and HACCP standards, using clean capsules free from fillers, binders, and artificial additives. As with all food supplements, these products should be used as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or have an existing medical condition, please consult your doctor or healthcare professional before use.
